| Summary | What to do when Cicero says your changes could not be saved and autosave is paused. |
What you’re seeing
Section titled “What you’re seeing”The save indicator in the top bar turns red and shows ⚠ Not saved. A banner above your sheet says:
Your changes could not be saved, … Autosave is paused. Your text is still here on screen; copy anything important somewhere safe, then restart Cicero.
What happened? Cicero tried to save and couldn’t, so it paused autosave for the rest of this session. It does this on purpose: it won’t keep writing into a project it doesn’t have access to. The reason for that could be anything from a change in permissions to a moved project folder.
1. Rescue your text first
Section titled “1. Rescue your text first”Do this before you click another sheet or close Cicero.
- Click inside the sheet you were writing.
- Press Ctrl + A to select everything, then Ctrl + C to copy it. (macOS: Cmd + A, Cmd + C.)
- Open Windows Notepad, Word, or any text app → press Ctrl + V (macOS: Cmd + V) to paste → save that file.
- If you also typed in the Notepad or a Lorebook field just before the warning, copy that text out too.
Your other sheets were saved before the problem started. The open sheet and any newly-written text are the ones at risk.
2. Find the cause
Section titled “2. Find the cause”The most common causes, in order:
| Cause | How to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The project folder was moved, renamed, or deleted outside Cicero (for example, in File Explorer) | Open the folder shown under Save Location (Project Hub → right-click the card → Edit). Is it still there? | Move it back, or use Open Project on its new location. See A Project Won’t Open. |
| The project is on a drive that was disconnected (USB stick, external drive, network drive) | Is the drive plugged in and showing in File Explorer? | Reconnect the drive |
| The disk is full | File Explorer → This PC → check free space | Free up space |
| A cloud-sync app locked the file (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive) | Is the project inside a synced folder? | Pause syncing, or move the project to a local folder like Documents |
| Antivirus or permissions blocked the save | Did your antivirus show an alert? | Allow Cicero in your antivirus, or move the project to Documents |
3. Restart and recover
Section titled “3. Restart and recover”- Close Cicero, then open it again.
- Open the project. If it won’t open, see A Project Won’t Open.
- Open each sheet you rescued. If anything is missing, paste it back in from your saved copy.
- Check that the top bar shows Saved after you type.
- Make a backup now. See Back Up a Project.

Section titled “Still stuck?”Email [email protected] with:
- The exact wording of the banner (a screenshot is best)
